Implementation
For pre employment, probation, random and with cause or suspicion, Dtec trains your appointed in house supervisors to screen with DrugWipe. This internal screening cuts cost significantly and reduces time lost to a minimum but also very importantly gives you a rapid indication whether this employee is likely to be unfit to work. The screener performs a very simple, quick and importantly, non-intrusive, wipe of the skin to look back several days. Once DrugWipe records a positive, confirmation must be obtained. This is by a chain of custody urine sample taken by a professional Dtec subcontractor on 24/7 call out with 2 hour response and sent to a laboratory for analysis and medical review. The employee is stood down on full pay. Not providing a confirmation sample has to be considered gross misconduct.
Analysis at the laboratory for Dtec is not then filtered on cost grounds with another immunoassay, rather, all samples go to the gold standard GC/MS for assessment to the relevant work place cut offs. If the laboratory toxicologist sees a need, they will refer the data to a Medical Review Officer for confirmation of illegal drug or above therapeutic dose of medicines. Results are securely delivered to management within five working days.
On receipt of the negative laboratory result the employee returns to work with an unaffected record. If the result is positive to illegal drugs, the employee enters the company’s disciplinary procedure and could either be released, or by agreement, be retained and undergo counselling and rehabilitation.
Dtec customers cover all the major unions, who see drug screening a necessity to help protect the majority of their members who do not take drugs. Local unions are wary initially but soon see the DrugWipe screen as the most non intrusive available and the complete Dtec process as extremely reliable with many inbuilt steps of security for their members. The process must be implemented in its entirety to stand up in a court of law.
The final question. Do you see a simple to implement, cost effective system, to educate, screen and confirm to legal requirements, that is acceptable to employees, unions and management?
Drugs and drug users are increasingly prolific in our society, prevent them potentially affecting your customers, work colleagues or your self?
